Formed in 2023, Split Chain comprises vocalist Roberto Martinez-Cowles, guitarists Oli Bowles and Jake Reid, bassist Tom Davies, and drummer Aaron Black. The quintet has rapidly gained acclaim for their distinctive fusion of shoegaze and nu-metal, a genre they’ve aptly dubbed “nu-gaze.”
Their music resonates with raw emotion, stemming from personal experiences and a shared journey of overcoming addiction. “We were writing music as an escape, a distraction, to create what we wanted to listen to,” the band reflects. “We ended up loving what we had created so much, and from this, Split Chain was formed.”
Their latest single, “I’m Not Dying To Be Here,” released on January 17th via Epitaph Records, delves into the complexities of severing ties with toxic relationships. The band describes it as “a defiant anthem about breaking free from toxic relationships, no matter how deep the connection.”
They further explain, “It explores the internal battle of standing your ground when the person causing harm is a family member, long-time partner, or close friend. It’s a raw and honest reflection on the courage it takes to choose yourself, even when it means walking away from someone you once trusted.”
In addition to their original work, Split Chain has demonstrated versatility with a well-received cover of Type O Negative’s “I Don’t Wanna Be Me,” earning praise from the original band. Their collaboration with Softcult on the track “(Re)-Extract” further showcases their dynamic range and commitment to addressing themes of personal struggle and resilience. “It’s so easy to get stuck in negative spirals, admitting defeat and accepting it as part of you and your personality; when in fact it is possible to find a way out,” they share.
